This publication shows the capability of near infrared spectroscopy, the base technology in JEDI, for estimating articular cartilage thickness. The study was conducted using animals samples but has now been validated in human joints.

The Biomedical Spectroscopy Lab wins Terkko Health X 2021 accelerator programme.
JED Explorer is an intraoperative diagnostic system for knee arthroscopy, developed by Incight Medical Technologies Oy Ltd. It combines near-infrared spectroscopy and AI to give surgeons real-time, quantitative data on cartilage and subchondral bone quality – objective tissue assessment at the exact moment surgical decisions are made.
The technology builds on more than a decade of peer-reviewed research from the Biomedical Spectroscopy Laboratory at the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, Finland, validated through animal, cadaver, and preclinical studies. Incight Medical Technologies is the company formed to bring this research to clinical and commercial reality.
Our mission is to equip surgeons with quantitative tools that complement clinical expertise — adding the molecular picture to what experienced hands and eyes already know. JED Explorer is designed to support better-informed treatment decisions, structured intraoperative documentation, and the growing precision requirements of modern cartilage repair.
